They’re not like everybody else: part 4

I recently passed into the ‘nervous nineties’ (it’s a cricket term, alright?) and so thought I’d mark this by doing the penultimate post in this series (1, 2 and 3 are also available, by the way). And it’s probably the most tenuous yet!

61. Inefficient waiter

Jo’s character during ‘You Still Want Me’ and both Ray & Pete later on are left unsatisfied.

62. Grenville always taking notes

Self-explanatory! And throughout most of the show.

63. Ray’s reaction to Dolly’s criticism

“You sound like a pair of alley cats!” And she looks like a…

64. Janet

Following ‘A Well Respected Man’, Robert & Grenville have a bit of a chat. Janet never quite does things the way they want her to! (I’ve had an indirect mention in this section, which is rather exciting.)

65. Larry trying to fit in

At the start of ‘Dead End Street’ – Dave & Joyce find it hilarious!

66. Washboard

Ray & Peggy having a bit of fun during ‘Dead End Street’.

67. “Are you gonna sign it or not?”

Ray thinks his dad isn’t going to sign the contract, despite his pleas.

68. Woo!

Adam & Liz have a bit of fun while he’s rushing over to get changed after ‘Dead End Street’.

69. Pete & Larry get into ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’

They’re unconvinced to begin with, but start making up dance moves before too long.

70. Backing singers

Check out the background to ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’…

71. “It’s too raw, too…”

Listen carefully for Ray’s response to Larry’s criticisms.

72. Ray with the suit of armour

Trying to sing along to ‘Till The End Of The Day’?

73. Cricket bat

Nick Sayce’s Grenville using the cricket bat as a guitar towards the end of ‘Till The End Of The Day’.

74. Ray & Rasa in ‘This Strange Effect’

Their reactions when singing alternate lines are really sweet.

75. Ray’s unexpected wedding guest

Watch what he mouths to Rasa…

76. Mick during Dave’s phone call

He doesn’t think Dave’s ideas are as important as Ray’s – and finds the rest very funny!

77. Pete’s reactions to Mick & Dave arguing in Cardiff

Ned pulls some brilliant faces here!

78. Dave baiting Mick

During ‘Where Have All The Good Times Gone’ Dave taps along, foreshadowing “you were behind the beat!”.

79. Pete & the air hostesses

He starts getting a little flirty during ‘This Time Tomorrow’.

80. “Are you people the English Kinks?”

Ray has a novel way of pointing out that they are indeed the English Kinks, from England…

81. Waving to the girls from the car

Dave is much more enthusiastic than Mick!

82. “Whoa, Nellie!”

Jo’s police officer is really intrigued by Dave’s hair…

83. “Your brother looks like your sister…”

Ray takes this quite well; John & Ryan both have their own ways of answering this question.

84. Ray & Rasa’s transatlantic phone call

Watch Rasa during ‘Sitting In My Hotel’ and Ray during ‘I Go To Sleep’.

85. Lighting in ‘I Go To Sleep’

At “when morning comes” and “night time descends on me”, the lighting is subtly beautiful on each line.

86. “I’m not talkin’ to you, stretch!”

Mick thinks Klein insulting Wace is hilarious.

87. Mick & Dave in ‘Sunny Afternoon’

Dave’s mucking around a bit and Mick isn’t particularly impressed, despite the euphoria!

88. Melodica

Philip Bird has a bit of fun playing the melodica during ‘Sunny Afternoon’

89. Vinny Leigh in ‘Sunny Afternoon’

Once the celebrations start, watch Vinny. Particularly during the Bobby Moore speech!

90. “That is a nice lick!”

Mick, once again, is less impressed than Pete…

I’ll let you in on a secret: I’ve still got more. I really didn’t think I would, but I do! That will be the absolute last one though. I promise.

  1. Hi! I am so fascinated with you because Sunny Afternoon is my all time favorite show. Unfortunately I’ve only seen it 4 times as I live in the states but was able to see it while studying abroad. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of it. How have you seen it 100 times?! So jealous!
