Suddenly we only have two months left with a Sunny West End! And so our penultimate Cast Member of the Month at @SunnyAftFans HQ, taking over from the glorious Charlie, is leading lady Megan Leigh Mason.
Megan trained at Rose Bruford College (several other Sunny cast are also alumni), and has had a few stage roles in The Elephant Man, Boeing Boeing & Godspell. She is no stranger to singing onstage – you can listen to some recordings on YouTube & SoundCloud. Sunny Afternoon excitingly has marked her West End debut!
At October’s cast change, Megan took over from Lillie Flynn as Ray’s first wife Rasa. As this role also includes doubling as another of the Davies sisters (Dolly) and some backing music (tambourine, guitar, banjo – mostly in the first act), she has a lot on her plate with several very speedy costume changes required! It is only when we reach Sheffield that Rasa takes over, getting her own solo moment partway through the second act.
Megan’s voice is, I think, a unique one as far as the West End goes. Her style is certainly very different to four of the five other ladies who have taken on the role (sadly I never got to see Kirsty, although she did get a few shows); I think it does the show credit that they are happy for individual styles to be kept – and to not decide against casting someone because they expect something in particular. Her vocals have gone from strength to strength over the past 11 months, providing a heartbreaking I Go To Sleep, as well as coming through in the background of A Rock and Roll Fantasy with a wonderfully spine-tingling harmony (a favourite moment of mine).
She has won herself many fans during this cast’s run, including Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) himself when he & Dave Davies came to see the show a few months ago.
As is now customary, although we’ve had varying luck with catching people, we would love to take your questions to put to Megan at some point this month! So if there’s anything you’d like to know about our West End Rasa, feel free to comment below, drop us a tweet or find our Facebook thread.
