This morning Selladoor Worldwide has announced the return of anarchic puppet show Avenue Q, set to tour the UK again in 2019. The very politically incorrect comedy musical was last seen on tour in 2016 (following a five-year West End run and two other tours in 2014 & 2015), though it has been an Off Broadway staple in New York for some time (I was fortunate enough to see it at the New World Stages almost exactly a year ago!) – and has been performed in over ten countries worldwide. It also won three Tony Awards (Best Musical, Best Score & Best Book) following its Broadway debut in 2003.
“Meet Princeton, a bright-eyed graduate who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. Brian the out-of- work comedian and his therapist fiancée Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker and his closet gay Republican roommate Rod, an Internet ‘sexpert’ called Trekkie Monster, Lucy the Slut (the name says it all!) and a very cute kindergarten teacher named Kate Monster. Featuring hysterically funny songs including The Internet is for Porn and Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist, Avenue Q is an hilarious musical with a warm (and very fuzzy) heart.”
Following its opening at Kings Theatre in Portsmouth, the show is currently scheduled to visit:
- New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham
- Orchard Theatre, Dartford
- Basildon Towngate
- Derby Theatre
- Bradford Alhambra
- Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury
- Wirral Floral Pavilion
- Cheltenham Everyman
- Ipswich Regent Theatre
- Brighton Theatre Royal
- Wolverhampton Grand
- Cardiff New Theatre
- Glasgow Kings Theatre
- Sheffield Lyceum
Further dates will be announced in due course.
The show was written by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (co-creator of The Book of Mormon, and songwriter for Disney’s Frozen); the creative team also includes Cressida Carré (direction & choreography), Richard Evans (design), Charlie Morgan Jones (lighting design) & Chris Bogg (sound design). Paul Jomain (Q Puppets) is responsible for puppet design, and puppet coaching is by Nigel Plaskitt.
Avenue Q begins its UK tour at the Kings Theatre Portsmouth, running from 21-26 January 2019. Tickets are on sale soon, available online or from individual box offices.
