Following in the footsteps of productions such as Stick Man, The Gruffalo’s Child, Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales and The Scarecrows’ Wedding, Kneehigh’s Mike Shepherd has adapted Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler’s book Zog for the stage. It will feature an original folk score from actor & musician Johnny Flynn (singer-songwriter with The Sussex Wit), and is designed by Katie Sykes (Jane Eyre, National Theatre); it’s produced by Freckle Productions and Rose Theatre Kingston.
“Freckle has a proud and longstanding association with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler having adapted many of their wonderful books”, say Jay Green and Jen Sutherland. “We are delighted to now be partnering with Rose Theatre Kingston to bring Zog to the stage, in what will be a hugely exciting and imaginative adaptation by Mike Shepherd, with thrilling original music by Johnny Flynn.”
“An adventure that promises to delight young children and their families alike”
The super-enthusiastic Zog is out to win a coveted gold star at Madam Dragon’s school, but his clumsy nature gets the better of him – and lands him with a few more bumps & burns than he might have wanted! Princess Pearl comes to his aid just in time, as he’s set to face a massive challenge: a duel with the knight, Sir Gadabout the Great.
Zog was first published in 2010, winning the Galaxy National Children’s Book of the Year Award, going on to be a consistent best-seller. It is set to make its small screen debut this Christmas as part of the BBC’s festive programming, with a 30-minute animated film (featuring an all-star cast) being produced by Magic Light Pictures. The book’s author, Julia Donaldson says, “I’m tremendously excited that Zog will be taking flight around the UK in this first ever stage production. Going to the theatre can be a truly magical experience, I know it will be such a thrill to see the world of Zog being brought to life on stage.”
This is very much a family production, which is suitable for children of all ages. After a brief residency at Kingston’s Rose Theatre, Zog will head out on a tour the length & breadth of the UK that will run from 28 February-27 July 2019. It will take in venues such as Eden Court (Inverness), Oxford Playhouse, The Sands Centre (Carlisle), St David’s Hall (Cardiff), The Lowry (Salford), Sheffield City Hall, Guildford G Live and The Radlett Centre.

We’ll have fire extinguishers at the ready for an adventure that promises to delight young children and their families alike.”
Zog will run at Rose Theatre Kingston from 14-23 February 2019 – tickets are available online or from the box office. Full details of the tour can be found on the official website.
