Following a successful outing at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the musical adaptation of David Baddiel‘s AniMalcolm will be heading out on a UK tour in 2019 – beginning at the McMillan Theatre in Bridgwater (Somerset), it will visit 35 venues in total over the course of a couple of months.

This production has been put together by Story Pocket Theatre, whose patron is Michael Morpurgo; previous shows of theirs include King Arthur and A Pocketful of Grimms, both of which played at Edinburgh Fringe and toured. The company brings both classic and original children’s stories to the stage in their own unique style, trying to make it a magical and exciting experience for the viewer.

“It will be a real treat to see Malcolm adventuring around the UK with his menagerie of animals in tow”

Malcolm’s house is full of pets of a multitude of varieties, as his family is crazy about them – the only problem is that Malcolm doesn’t share their enthusiasm. In fact, he really doesn’t like animals! So when the school trip he’s been looking forward to turns out to be heading to a farm… However, this isn’t any ordinary school trip, and could just be the chance Malcolm needs to understand animals better. Will he come back from the trip a changed person?

The show features a directing team of Julia Black and Adam Fletcher-Forde, with musical direction from David Perkins and movement direction from Shona Morris. In terms of design, Jacqueline Trousdale provides costumes, and Declan Randall is in charge of lighting. AniMalcolm brings together puppetry, physical theatre and great storytelling to bring Baddiel’s book to life in vibrant fashion.

“It has been such a thrill to see AniMalcolm brought to life on stage, and as a musical!” says David Baddiel. “Story Pocket have done a wonderful job with this adaptation, and it will be a real treat to see Malcolm adventuring around the UK with his menagerie of animals in tow.”

David Baddiel’s credits include the hit film The Infidel, the platinum number 1 single Three Lions (with Frank Skinner), and TV presenting on programmes such as Fantasy Football. His most recent stand-up show (My Family: Not the Sitcom) first ran at the Menier Chocolate Factory before a 15-week West End run at the Playhouse Theatre.

ANiMALCOLM will run at the McMillan Theatre on 16 February 2019 – tickets are available online or from the box office. Full details of the tour can be found on the official website.
