For once, an idea that I’ve had up my sleeve for a little while – though that doesn’t mean it’s fully formed, by any means. As 2022 marks the 25th anniversary of the Stereophonics’ first ever album release, Word Gets Around, I decided that the only possible theme for this particular challenge week was the Phonics (they are probably my favourite extant band, after all).
From Saturday (26 March) until next Friday (1 April), please settle back and enjoy #MindTheBand 2022: Keeping Up With The Joneses! I’m well aware that the band hasn’t been 100% Welsh for quite some time now, but as both of the remaining founding members share that very Welsh surname, the subtitle pretty much wrote itself.
It’s a less work-heavy week than normal, so I’m optimistic about my chances of getting a full blog post out every day – plus I’ll obviously be posting across various formats when the mood takes me.
Blog post-wise, I’ll be following in the footsteps of “I Can Hear Music” and “Discovering The Classics” by beginning a series of posts about Stereophonics albums which are marking significant anniversaries this year. To sit alongside that, I’ll also share a full review of the latest album, Oochya! (better late than never, eh?). I’m also hoping to get some list-based posts together, and maybe get some fellow fans involved; though I’ve been a fan for over 20 years (apparently I’m old now), it would be great to hear from anyone who has been with the band from the very beginning – or perhaps only recently discovered them.
Just like last year, I have a real-life gig to go to! That’s why I’ve timed this week the way I have, so I can kick off in style with some live music and then spend the next six days recovering… I’m tempted to round things off with another stop on the tour (should tickets still be available), but we’ll see how I get on. I’m going to write up the first show, anyhow, and will also do the usual daily diary post and Spotify playlist compilation, as I’m always on the lookout for a different selection of songs to listen to on a walk or during the commute. Maybe I’ll even use it to soundtrack the remaining few days of my Cancer Research 10,000 steps a day challenge for March? (Shameless plug for donations, there.)
So, Phonics fans, please do drop in and say hello – I’d love to hear your thoughts on this challenge week series, as well as your memories of the band over the years.
